The poor are a key constituency to God. Giving is an act of love as demonstrated by God through Christ. We often hear that God can’t owe anyone however our text today shows an exception to the rule and that’s because of the importance of this group to God. Christ said during his ministry that the poor (in spirit and in flesh) would always be among us- we see in these times that help is needed everywhere you turn. What acts of love and kindness are you spreading in your environment? Do you turn up your nose at the poor and become unconcerned about their wellbeing? Do you call the law enforcement on the poor because they are trespassing or overstepping set boundaries? Hard times have fallen on many and the poor are getting the hardest part of it. Jobs, Education, Health, Feeding and Housing are becoming more and more alien to most people, the wealth gap is widening daily. Wars have separated families, creating internal and external refuges within countries. How do we show God’s love to those in need around us?
Today, God says to you “lend to me by being kind, by giving, by supporting, by honoring these ones and I will repay.” Don’t be limited by your resources, collaborative actions with others can go a long way to alleviate some of the suffering around us. You can do more. Be God’s friend today, lend to Him, give to the poor.
