Fast and Furious – 1

Greetings beloved! I pray the year is off to a good start. First things first, always be thankful, it does a lot for your morale. Count your blessings, be grateful as you remain expectant for more.

As is typical with Pentecostal Churches here in Nigeria, a corporate fast is called at the beginning of the year for various reasons. This has become traditional, even the Orthodox Churches have joined in this traditional of an early year fast.

Now, the thing about traditions is that most people join in ‘just because’ without an understanding of what really should be. Today my desire as always is that people know God for themselves and grow into an intimate relationship with Him so things are done from a place of faith and understanding rather than ‘my Pastor/Church called a fast” so I am fasting. It becomes an ‘observance’ rather than a God thing.

"The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice and let the oppressed go free. "

Our text is taken from Isaiah 58:6 (GNT)

Fasting should be a way of life for a believer, not just once a year with the Church, one should be sensitive to the Holy Spirit to recognize when He calls an individual fast. This could be for several reasons; to make you aware of something, to receive a depth of revelation that He needs you to have, to intercede for countries, people etc, the most vital part of a fast is PRAYER!! If you are only fasting and not taking time to pray and hear from God- you are merely starving yourself. The prayer during the fast is not when you are breaking (yes!!) – you pray and listen to the Holy Spirit the entire day. Fasting and Praying requires a certain level of discipline, it should never be flippant.

Secondly, a fast is to bring us closer to God and to be submitted to His Will and His Ways. What are our desires/prayer points during a fast? Breakthrough? Prosperity? Next level promotion? All good, however have we ever wondered what God wants from us in a fast? Alignment to His Will, walking in purpose, breaking out of every limitation to this Walk, coming into the deep with Him, boldness to stand up to wickedness, to speak His truth etc.

In this period of corporate fasts, let us be aware of God’s intimate requests of us. Let us also be disciplined in praying without ceasing during this period and not wait till 6pm to break the fast and maybe pray. Let us seek to have a deeper understanding of what a (this) fast means to God. Let the Holy spirit guide us to this knowledge and help us to be authentic before God. You need not please any man, church or Pastor. Walk right by God.

Study Isaiah 58, make notes of what the prophet is speaking about concerning the fast. Reflect and soul search. Cultivate a lifestyle of fasting and praying – let the Holy Spirit teach you this, it’s vital to your growth as a believer.
